St. Basil’s in Fawkner is one of Melbourne’s dozens aged care facilities battling a surge in coronavirus infections.
Since the first 25 cases were recorded on Friday, more staff members and residents have tested positive to the virus.
Speaking to Neos Kosmos, Chairman of the Board, Kon Kontis, confirmed that as of Sunday there were 14 staff and 18 residents infected, “in their majority of Greek background.”
The St Basil’s Homes facility in Fawkner, operating under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, caters for 150 residents in total.
Out of those confirmed positive to COVID-19, it is estimated that five are hospitalised while those still at the aged care facility remain isolated separately from the rest of the residents.

Mr Kontis says all measures possible were taken to protect the elderly residents and staff members, with Archbishop Makarios personally overseeing the situation receiving regular briefings.
The provider has requested for any residents exhibiting symptoms to be transferred to hospitals, but approval is yet to be granted.
“Many of those found positive to the virus are asymptomatic. Sadly, others presenting symptoms are not being accepted at hospitals,” Mr Kontis said.

Adding to the complexity and concerns, Mr Kontis reports some of the tests conducted went missing.
“So, everyone, had to undergo the examination from the beginning, tests again. Some were conducted on Sunday, with the rest expected to finish on Monday.”
Meanwhile, family members of residents found positive have also been notified to undergo the test.
“The outbreak has been traced back to a staff member, that was not exhibiting any symptoms.
“This virus is like a fire out of control[…] We are doing everything we can,” Mr. Kontis said.
