Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, one of the most high-profile soccer players in England, was arrested in the early hours of Friday following a late-night incident on Mykonos.

United released a statement prior to Mr Maguire’s appearance in Greek court in the Aegean island of Syros stating that he has been “fully co-operating” with Greek authorities.

The United defender along with his brother and a friend were arrested on charges of verbally abusing and using physical violence against police as well as attempted bribery, reported Greek state ERT TV.

The police were called to an incident involving two quarrelling groups of people. It is alleged by police that three men abused and punched one of the policemen who tried to break up the groups, and subsequently resisted arrest. The report also states that one of the arrested men tried to offer police a bribe to avoid being taken into custody.

The police report does not name Mr Maguire.
