The overcrowded migrant camp of Moria, Lesbos, is burning. A blaze broke out in the early hours of Wednesday when the fire brigade was called to the camp.

Nine engines carrying 28 firefighters battled the flames along with volunteers, but the cause of the fire is still unclear.

The police took the migrants, carrying their belongings, to safety,

There are more than 12,000 people at the camp created to host a capacity of 3,000 people. Volunteer groups have criticised the conditions on the camp which recently came under the spotlight after 35 COVID-19 cases were recorded there. The camp has been in lockdown since the first case was documented, however the cramped conditions made social distancing and basic hygiene measures hard to implement.
