A donation of $100,000 from the Cypriot Government for the victims of the Victoria bushfires was announced by Cyprus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Markos Kyprianou, during his visit in Canberra last Tuesday.

Kyprianou met with the Foreign Affairs Minister, Stephen Smith, and briefed him on the latest developments in the direct talks about the Cyprus problem.

The two Ministers also discussed ways to further enhance bilateral relations, such as cooperation in the fields of economy, tourism, water management and prevention of fires. At the press conference, that followed, the Australian Foreign Minister thanked Cyprus for its bushfire relief contribution. Mr Smith also reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to a viable and just settlement for the Cyprus problem.

At a dinner hosted by Mr Smith in honour of his Cypriot counterpart, there was further discussion of bilateral as well as regional issues, such as the situation in the Middle East and South-East Asia and the Pacific.

The Australian Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese and the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Tony Burke also attended the dinner.

Kyprianou had a brief meeting with the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.

The Cypriot Foreign Minister visited the Australian Parliament, where he briefed the Chairman and members of the Australia-Cyprus Friendship Group on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue. Kyprianou also briefed the Chairman and members of the Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Cyprus issue.

Kyprianou met and exchanged views on bilateral relations and the Cyprus issue, with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Harry Jenkins, the Senate President, John Hogg, the Leader of the Opposition, Malcolm Turnbull, and the Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop.

The Cypriot Minister concluded his visit to Australia meeting with the Finance MInister, Lindsay Tanner, with whom he discussed the prospects of economic cooperation, the world economic crisis and the latest developments on the Cyprus issue.
