There’s something very sexy about a man in a hat. It makes me think of classier times, when people put more effort into their clothes and men wouldn’t leave the house without something on their heads. There was even an entire branch of social etiquette devoted to proper hat wearing.

Hats have been worn throughout history for protection against the elements, for religious reasons, for safety and as a fashion accessory. In the past, hats were an indicator of social status and in the military a hat denotes rank and regiment.

A man wearing a hat suggests a sense of confidence, style and a good dose of humour –  a man who doesn’t take himself too seriously and is willing to try something new.

Sadly, very few modern men wear hats now.

Yes, there are several celebrities who never leave the house without their trademark headgear, but I’m not sure they’re really helping the hat wearing cause.
I mean who wants to look like Molly Meldrum or that short little judge from So You Think You Can Dance?

A great hat can frame your face, drawing attention to key features, it can also disguise a thinning head of hair or help out when your having a bad hair day. Even better, a hat can protect you from the elements and help to keep your head warm.

Hat wearing tips

The number one rule when it comes to choosing a hat is comfort. It is essential that you feel comfortable and confident with the hat you are wearing. If you don’t love the hat or you think it’s a bit silly, it will show.

A hat draws a lot of attention to your face, so it is essential that your hat matches the proportions of your face.

If your face is small you should wear a small hat, similarly if your face is wide, choose a hat with a wide brim. A small hat on a wide face will just make it look wider, while a big hat will just drown a small face.

Even if you’re just a jeans and t-shirt guy, a hat will dress up your look and give an impression of casual, effortless cool.

Don’t try to match too much. Your hat shouldn’t be made of the same fabric as your jacket. A leather hat and jacket will make you look like the bikie from the Village People.

The colour of your hat should complement and flatter your skin tone. Paler skin tones shouldn’t shy away from browns and reds, while darker and yellow skin tones are suited to almost any colour.

There are so many kinds of hats! Trilby, panama, fedora, tweed cap, bowler hat, slouch hat, pork pie, cowboy cap, cowboy hat and trucker cap. Don’t be afraid to be bold or attract attention. A hat is great way to express a little bit of individuality and explore your personal style.
