South Melbourne consolidated second spot on the VPL table with a 4-0 thrashing of second-bottom Whittlesea Zebras.

Goran Zoric scored two goals from the home side, while Vaughan Coveny and Fernando De Moraes also scored for South.

South got the ideal start when Coveny brilliantly chipped the advancing Zebras custodian after a long ball played the big Kiwi through.

Indecision cost the home side a second goals after Francesco Stella elected to dribble defenders in the box when it looked easier to shoot at the goal.

South’s Brazilian ex-patriot De Moraes launched a rocket into the back of the net leaving the Zebras keeper helpless.

In the second half South’s goal keeper Tommi Tomich endured a quiet night.

He kept his clean sheet intact by making an impressive save from a close range header when South’s left back , Rhodri Payne was beaten to the ball and a cross went through.

It was the last time the Zebras would trouble South as Zoric scored two second half goals.

The first, a loose ball atop South’s attacking box, was rifled into the back of the net.

His second goal, came in the 85th minute after a succession of corners saw De Moraes control the ball in the box, only for the Australian Futsalroo to unselfishly give the ball to his right side from where Zoric had the simplest of finishes.

Heidelberg conceded three goals in three minutes against Altona to draw 3-3 away from home. The Bergers completely dominated the first half, racing to a half time 3-0 lead.

But in the 77th minute, the match was turned on its head. Altona got back into the game with a goal from a cross on the right.

One minute later, and Altona got their second goal of the night after a speculative 25-meter shot appeared to take a deflection.

But Heidelberg completely panicked and in the 79th minute, Altona got level after a goal from a corner.

Oakleigh were held to a 1-1 draw away to Sunshine George Cross on what is reputed to be the worst pitch in the VPL.

The Cannons are in eighth place on the table with 23 points, two behind Heidelberg who have 25 points.

South Melbourne is away to third from bottom Richmond, on Friday July 3 while Oakleigh take on rock-bottom Preston away and Heidelberg play Whittlesea.
