Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis mounted a strong attack of main Opposition party PASOK for suggesting it will try to use the upcoming election of the President to force early general elections.

Speaking at the launch of the ‘Art and Democracy’ exhibition at the Zappeion Mansion in Athens, Karamanlis said current President Karolos Papoulias has broad appeal to the Greek populace and asked for the Constitution to be respected.

Karamanlis said that the actions of PASOK to force early elections “… is a violation of the Constitution and an attempt to trivialise institutions. This is not fair for any politician, for any party. PASOK’s position constitutes an extreme irresponsibility.”
