Russia’s women’s water polo team proved too experienced for Greece, winning by the slimmest of margins and beating the Greek team to the bronze medal.
The 10-9 victory was enough for Russia to take home the World Championship bronze medal in on Friday.

It took a Russian goal two seconds from time for the bronze-medal match to be settled, after Greece had led 8-7 and 9-8.

Greek attacks collapsed under the Russian pressure as the tight match reached its finale, while the experience of Russia allowed them to overwhelm Greece in the final moments of the match.

Despite losing the match, this was the best ever showing for a Greek women’s team in a world championship, as this has been the first time that a Greek side has made it to the semi final of the event.

Ironically, Greece beat all their other opponents in the tournament except for the USA and Russia, who each beat Greece twice.

The Greek women’s team fought hard against the United States but in the end succumbed 8-7 in the World Championship semi final on Wednesday night.

The Americans stormed in to the match in Rome with a 3-0 lead, but soon Greece managed to bring the game to 3-3 and threatened to take the upper hand.

The more experienced US side, though, were more decisive in attack and stayed ahead by leading 8-6 into the last minute of the game.

That was when Greece got back within striking distance (8-7) and would have equalised in the end had it not been for a spectacular save by the US goalie.
