The 2009 Australian Hellenic Golf Open was officially launched at the Greek Deli Tavern in South Yarra two weeks ago.

The tournament will be held over two days at Moonah Links, on the Peninsula next week.

The Australian Hellenic Golf Federation, who organise the event, announced that the  Bank of Cyprus was the tournament sponsor for 2009 and that over 100 golfers of Greek backgrounds from across Australia are expected to compete in the event.

Theo Theodore, President of the Australian Hellenic Golf Federation (AHGF), thanked them and all the sponsors for their continued support.

“This is a great result for the Tournament and the Federation to have an organisation of the calibre of the Bank of Cyprus on board to join our loyal sponsors. Whilst they are an internationally recognised company, George Tacticos, Paul Orfanos and the rest of the team at the Bank of Cyprus should be congratulated for their continuing support of grass roots sporting and community organisations.  The involvement of the Bank of Cyprus can only continue the growth of the Tournament.”

The organisers also announced that the Australian Greek Welfare Society will be the designated charity for funds raised by the tournament.

Mr Theodore also highlighted the growing links the Federation has with the golfing world in Greece.

“We had 10 AHGF members representing Australia in the Greeks Abroad Tournament held at the Glyfada Golf Club in Athens at the end of August 2009. This is an event that we were instrumental in getting off the ground and is being actively supported by the Hellenic Golf Federation and the Greek Government.  Greeks from every corner of the globe met in Glyfada to participate in the event.”
