Midfielder Costas Katsouranis scored a goal in both halves of Panathinaikos’s game against PAOK on Saturday to give the Greens a 2-1 win that keeps them joint-top of the table.

Katsouranis scored his first when he headed a cross by Sotiris Ninis in the 23rd minute.

Panathinaikos only kept the lead for 16 minutes as Vieirinha struck back to make it 1-1 with a low shot

The Greens piled on the pressure in the second half but did not find a way through until the 70th minute when Djibril Cisse set up Katsouranis in the area and the midfielder volleyed in for his sixth goal of the season.

PAOK also had Vladimir Ivic sent off five minutes before the end of the game.

The win keeps Panathinaikos top of the Super League, on the same points as Olympiakos.

After eight rounds, the perennial rivals have 22 points each and are already nine points clear of Aris in third.

Olympiakos found themselves in the exact same position they’d been in on Tuesday when they went behind to an early goal against Standard Liege in the Champions League.

Just like on that night, Costas Mitroglou, who is rapidly turning into a talisman for the Reds, levelled the scores, this time in the 38th minute.

For large parts of the game, it looked like Ergotelis would snatch the lead again but the Cretans missed a series of chances.

They were made to pay in the 85th minute – Olympiakos leaving it late again as they did on Tuesday – when a cross found Dudu unmarked in the box. The ball was slightly behind the Brazilian but he swung his leg around to connect and send the ball into the corner.

Vangelis Kaounos pulled one back for Asteras with 10 minutes left but it proved to be too little to late for the Peloponnesean side.
