The Oakleigh Market was operating as normal on Thursday morning after a small fire broke out in its premises on Wednesday afternoon.

Around 3 o’clock, after the market had closed a fire was detected in the rubbish area.

The fire was quickly controlled by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade personnel that attended without causing any extensive damage.

A local vendor who spoke to Neos Kosmos English Edition but declined to be identified said that “The market was closed at the time and we were cleaning up.

The MFB was here within a couple of minutes they evacuated us, they quickly extinguished the fire and everything was over in an hour.”

A spokeswoman for the management of Oakleigh Market, Anna Tartaro stated: “Yesterday [Wednesday] there was a small fire. It is still under investigation so I can’t say too much but the market is still running as usual.”

The exact cause of the fire had not been determined at the time of writing this report.
