The Greek-Australian Cultural League launched its annual periodical Antipodes Vol. 55 at the Treasury Theatre, Melbourne last week.

This year’s edition was dedicated to Rena Frangioudakis for her contribution as journalist and media announcer to the Greek community spanning which spans 43 years.

Cathy Alexopoulos the president of the League said; “Rena is part of our Greek Australian heritage and our soul here in Victoria.”

The winners of the bilingual Literary Competition were also announced and the awards presented to them.  There were 21 winners of various awards in categories poetry and short story in English and Greek.

In the Greek language catagory, Artemis Vazirgiantziki took the first prize in poetry while Stella Stoupi was awarded the first prize in short story section.

In the English language catagory, Maria Dimaki took out the first prize in poetry while Monika Athanasiou took out the first prize for her short story.

The event was a success in, what Ms Alexopoulos said was promoting the Greek language to the “wider Greek-Australian community.”

The Greek Australian Cultural League of Melbourne (GACLM) was established in 1970 and organises activities throughout the year such as the annual bilingual Literary Competition as well as publishing the annual bilingual periodical Antipodes.

This periodical has been circulating for 35 years and is the longest circulating Greek-Australian periodical in Australia.

“This is something we are very proud of,” said Ms Alexopoulos.
