One of Australia’s most promising teenagers, Greek Australian Jesse Makarounas has joined Perth Glory for the next two seasons. The17 year-old, has spent the last year at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
“We are absolutely delighted to get Jesse on board, he’s an exciting young prospect,” Perth Glory coach Ian Ferguson said. “He can play three or four different positions going forward, left or right, as the number 10 and through the middle, so he’s a fantastic acquisition.”
A product of the National Training Centre in Perth, Makarounas played two pre-season games for Perth Glory last season. He was just 15 years-old at the time. “We had him up in Newman for the game against Gold Coast and he also played against Armadale and did really well that night and scored two goals,” Ferguson added.
Makarounas will join his new teammates for pre-season training once he finishes his commitments with the Qantas Joeys at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico 2011 from June 18. Makarounas was awarded the golden boot at the 2010 AFC U-16 Championship in Tashkent when he ended the tournament as leading goal scorer with five.
