78 per cent of the members of the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales present at yesterday’s Extra General Meeting, voted in favour of restoring the relations between the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and the community.

This historic vote will put an end to the division that’s seen a schism between the broader Greek Australian Community in New South Wales for over 50 years.

678 members of the community voted in yesterday’s meeting with 531 of the voters were for an end to the schism while only 133 were against. There were 14 invalid votes. Over 800 members of the Greek Community gathered at the meeting.

Following this vote, the community has to go to the relevant Australian authorities to inform of the changes within the Greek Orthodox Community’s constitution. They have until July 31 to inform the Archdiocese that the process is currently action. After July 31, the implementation phase will begin.

Neos Kosmos will provide an in depth analysis of this meeting in Saturday’s edition of the paper including stakeholder reactions and community responses.
