Professor Michael Tsianikas, in association with the Department of Modern Greek at Flinders University, will present the lecture Timaeus: Plato, Cosmogony and the foundation of the western culture as part of the Odyssey Festival in Adelaide. The lecture will focus on one of the most influential philosophical discourses of all times.

‘Timaeus’ is a Platonic dialogue about the creation of the universe, the manufacture of a cosmic soul and the creation of human life by a Demiurge. In ‘Timaeus’ the most challenging metaphysical questions are discussed in an almost miraculous language: eternal models are real forms of life, being and becoming, same and different, cosmic order and time.

Also, one of the major focuses of the dialogue is the use of geometrical procedures by the Demiurge to achieve the best possible creative results. ‘Timaeus’ will become an amazing source of catalytic changes in the area of philosophy, religion, astronomy, medicine, arts and literature over the last two millenniums.

The lecture ‘Timaeus: Plato, Cosmogony and the foundation of the western culture’ will be held on Wednesday 12 October at 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm at Olympic Hall, 288 Franklin Street. Entry is free but you need to RSVP on (08) 4307 or email gocsa@gocsa.org.au
