Australian television audiences will get a chance to finally see Christos Tsiolkas’ novel The Slap on their screens. The eight-part television series screens nationally in Australia on Thursday 6 October at 8.30 pm.
The Slap explores what happens when one single event has shattering repercussions. In a moment of anger, Harry (Alex Dimitriades’ character) slaps Hugo at a suburban barbecue for his cousin’s 40th birthday – Hugo is a defenceless child and Harry is not his father. From then on, this tight-knit group of friends and family will look at how this one action will change the way they view each other, their families and society.
What follows is the ricocheting effect this has on everyone and the way their stories are connected by this one slap. Each episode reveals the slap from another person’s perspective, while you are left watching each character face up to their own fundamental truths about themselves and their lives and how they’ve all been ‘slapped’ in their own way. All episodes have a different director and writer, ensuring that each person’s story is told in an individual way.
