The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) expressed its “deepest condolences” to the North Korean people on the death of Kim Jong-il.

A short statement published in the party’s newspaper, Rizospastis, said that the message had come from the party’s central committee.

“The central committee of Communist Party of Greece expresses its deepest condolences to the central of the Workers Party of Korea, the leadership of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and its people on the death of Kim Jong-il, general secretary of the Workers Party of Korea.”

The KKE added that the people of North Korea had the “right to move along the development path that it had chosen against all sorts of imperialist interventions in the country”. Defending this right was now “particularly important”, the KKE statement message, now that “preying imperialist forces were increasing their aggression” against North Korea.

“The KKE opposes such projects,” the message concluded. “We stand in solidarity with the anti-imperialist struggle of the Workers Party of Korea and the Korean people.” The KKE maintains fraternal relations with North Korea, and earlier this month, it invited a delegation from the secretive Asian state to an international communist meeting held in Athens.
