A special assembly will be held at South Oakleigh Secondary College to recognise the efforts of a special group of students – the Peer Support leaders of the school, this Thursday.

The Peer Support Program is a strong part of the culture of the College. The program involves a group of Year 10 students who support Year 7’s as they make the transition from primary school to high school.

Sophie Stamatelatos, the Peer Support Co-ordinator at South Oakleigh said: “Whether it’s volunteering for mentoring roles, winning the first prize in last year’s Greek Student Film Festival or artistic scholarships to Thessaloniki, our students need to be acknowledged and rewarded.”
Zac Prokopiou, a Year 7 student will be travelling to Greece on a soccer scholarship from the soccer club, ‘Panathinaikos’, stated that “Peer Support really helped me settle into high school.”
Mrs Stamatelatos emphasised the school community is keen to support students from a wide-range of backgrounds including recent arrivals of students from Greece. “We all appreciate that moving to a new country involves major change.

The new students who have come from Athens, Thessaloniki and Korinthos, deserve as much support as possible to develop their talents.”

The College is extending an invitation to parents and prospective students to attend the South Oakleigh College Open Night on Wednesday 28 March at 7:00pm. For further information on how to enrol in the College, please contact Year 7 Co-ordinator and Transition Leader, Mark Picone on 9579 2322.
