The precise date of the general elections will be finalised during Holy Week – which starts on Monday 9 April – the government spokesman said on Monday.
Speaking on SKAI TV, Pantelis Kapsis said that nothing has changed with regard to the proposed dates, which are April 29 or May 6.
Kapsis emphasised his view that the work of government must continue before and after the elections, adding that there is no room for slackness.
“The impression must not be created among the public that the difficulties have passed,” Kapsis said.
He also said that no amendments would be tabled in parliament if not previously approved by the prime minister’s office, in order, he said, “to put a stop to the ‘amendments industry’ phenomenon”.
Prime Minister Lucas Papademos would be reviewing personally all draft legislation, after it emerged that last-minute legislative amendments or “riders” appearing to favour marginal Pasok and New Democracy constituencies were finding their way to parliament.
“Lawmakers themselves have expressed outrage that this was going on. That’s why the order was given for all draft legislation to be sent to the prime minister’s office,” Kapsis said.
He argued that regional authorities were overreacting to plans to create 30 migrant detention centres around the country.
“It’s being portrayed as if nuclear bombs were being placed next to residential communities … But that is not the case. It’s up to us to explain that we are not putting people in danger.”
