The Supreme Court prosecutor’s office asked parliament to lift the parliamentary immunity of Democratic Alliance president MP Dora Bakoyannis, in order to be investigated after it was established that she had submitted an inaccurate “source of income” statement.
Bakoyannis has not included in her declaration the sum of 1 million euros, transferred to London by her husband Isidoros Kouvelos in 2011.
In response, Bakoyannis spoke about a smear campaign targeting her and underlined that the parliament has formally informed her that it has received no such request from the Supreme Court.
She pointed out that “the people understand what the purpose of this move was, a day after the dissolution of parliament” in view of the May 6 elections.
She stressed that she will not make use of the parliamentary immunity, adding that her “fight against the illegal funding of political parties appears to be very annoying to many”.
The transfer of the sum in question was revealed earlier in the year in the annual hearing of the head of the money-laundering watchdog Supreme Court prosecutor Panagiotis Nikoloudis before the parliamentary Special Permanent Committee on Institutions and Transparency.
