The World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) says the Greek Government has begun proceedings to review the tax law that has confused and baffled Greeks abroad.
SAE Secretary Dr. Olga Sarantopoulos says the move is the first step in the right direction for a collaborative approach to battle the bureaucratic problems that have arisen.
“We believe that the review of the new law regarding the taxation for Greeks living abroad should deal with the essence of the problem and should not exclude the Diaspora from the process,” Dr Sarantopoulos said in a statement.
She calls for an international committee be set up to deal with each countries grievances with the law, that will relay them back to the tax department.
The uniqueness of each county’s laws makes for a bureaucratic nightmare, in Australia especially. The Australian Government does not have a double taxation law in place and does not issue some of the certificates that the law requested.
