As part of the art exhibition Antipodean Palette 2013, the Greek Australian Cultural League organised an afternoon of bilingual poetic compositions last Saturday, 30 June, in its mission to promote the written word.
The event, taking place at Steps Gallery in Carlton, was well attended by both the youth and senior members of the community.
Proceedings were inaugurated by the President of the Greek Australian Cultural League, Cathy Alexopoulos. Speeches were also given by the Consul General of Greece in Melbourne, Eleni Lianidou, who stipulated the importance and promotion of emerging Greek Australian poets and literature, and Paul Kiritsis, the Vice President of the League. Mr Kiritsis gave a discourse on the mythological milieus of pre-800 BCE that spawned and proliferated ancient Hellenic literature. Those who attended bore witness to the diversified concerns and interests of contemporary Greek Australian poets, all of whom gave recitations in their distinctive manner.
