They might have been the outsiders, but Melbourne club Heidelberg United has taken out top prize in the Hellenic Cup at Surfers Paradise.

Last Saturday, Heidelberg joined Brisbane Olympic FC and Surfers Paradise Apollo (the hosts) for a short tournament displaying the best of Greek community sport.

Going head to head, it was Brisbane Olympic and Heidelberg that reached the final, but in a 2-0 clean win, the traveling Heidelberg took the cup.

The team also took home a $1,000 cheque from sponsors The Coffee Club, while runners up Olympic and Apollo took home a $600 and $400 cheque respectively for their efforts.

Those making a day of the Cup were able to schmooze with the A-League’s George Lambadaridis and head of recruitment at Brisbane Roar, John Simes.

The cup was presented to the winning team by Apollo club president, Telly Karadimos, who said the Cup was not about winning, but about championing family and fun.

Apollo begins their Premier League campaign today, with a home match against premiers Broadbeach.
