‘Team Greece’ has made it through the first round of the Australian Open a winner, with young tennis stars Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari both eliminating their opponents.

Tsitsipas easily took on Italian Matteo Berrettini, beating him with 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(4) whereas Sakkari overcame Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko challenges scoring 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

While both athletes offered audiences a great performance it was their Greek fans that garnered more reactions on social media, leaving the rest of the spectators speechless with their overwhelming expression of support towards their compatriots.

The Greek fans, joined in a group, made the AusOpen match feel like a game of footy, coming up with imaginative rhymes and mottos that their either chanted or yelled to lift Tsitsipas’ and Sakkaris’ spirits at crucial moments.

“It was a very tough match for me, against an athlete that has accomplished so many great things, I’m very happy for my victory. The Greek audience was amazing. I thank them because they helped me when I needed it,” Sakkari told reporters after beating Ostapenko.

However, the support of the Greek fans group did not end with the Hellas tennis duo’s matches but it extended to Andy Murrey’s game chaired by Greek tennis umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore who has moved to Melbourne.

Several Australians took to Twitter and other social media platforms to express both their surprise and admiration for the Greek tennis fans.
