In the past, Melbourne inspectors on trams have had to deal with a range of reactions during inspections ranging from feigned ignorance to anger. One Greek Australian woman took a whole new approach by making inspectors wait for six minutes until she could complete her 20-minute transcendental meditation session.

Athanasopoulos ignored their existence instead of handing over her Myki ticket to verify she had paid for her trip. “I thought surely they’d understand, they will just think ‘oh, you’re meditating’,” Ms Athanasopoulos told Yahoo7.

Instead, the meditator was interrupted by the frustrated inspector that smacked on the window next to her head, banged the chair, then the bag on her lap and then started kicking her feet. When she asked the inspector to return in six minutes, Ms Athanasopoulos said the inspector berated her and threatened to call police if she refused to comply.

On Facebook, Ms Athanasopoulos said: “I truly felt that asking this woman for 6 minutes to continue a meditation would be met with acceptance and understanding.”

In Melbourne, Infringement Notices for failing to produce a valid ticket can still cost adults $242.
