ChangemakHER, a new movement for young female “change-makers”, are hosting a peaceful demonstration on 22 June to commemorate the death of Greek Australian Courtney (Konstandina) Herron. They are calling people to move forth and take action to stop violence against women.

“This is a peaceful demonstration. We will be marching from the State Library to Parliament House,” states an announcement being circulated on social media. “The tragic murder of Courtney Herron marks the 20th women killed who made headlines in Australia so far this year. These men felt they have the right to take a woman’s life.”

In Australia over the last year, 20 women have made the headlines as a result of violence against them. According to the group, thousands of women who experience sexual and domestic violence everyday do not make the headlines.

Facts provided by ChangemakHER state that one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner, whereas one in three Australian women have experienced physical violence from the age of 15 whereas, one in five Australian women experience sexual violence.

“Enough is enough. Violence against women needs to end now. We demand actions from the government. We demand the media to do the right thing. We call for actions from the members of the public,” state ChangemakHER on their social media site.
