The top only has room for one, and that’s what the Spartans proved during Saturday’s game against Essendon Grammar at PEGS Sporting Fields.

They beat their strongest first place contenders by 54 points.

Despite difficulty scoring in the first quarter of the game, the Spartans’ tight defence proved impregnable for the opposition, forcing Essendon to go into the second without a single point on the board.

The tight balance continued between the two teams, but Hawthorn eventually started to wear down their opponents thanks to the many fresh faces they had on the bench. They started to find more goals, widening the gap and grabbing victory with both hands.

This important result sees the Spartans go one win clear at the top of the ladder, with nine points and a single loss in their campaign so far.

They also have impressive statistics, succeeding in most of their KPI’s this season.
