Members of Platon, Adelaide’s Greek Workers’ League, met at the hall of St Constantine and Helen at Goodwood, Adelaide, for their annual assembly. Among the issues discussed by the members that gathered there were voting rights for Greeks abroad.

Platon’s position on the issue is that Greek immigrants who live abroad for many decades have no position to vote in elections, and it was stated that it would be dangerous for these people to decide on the future of the Greek nation when they do not know about Greek reality and aren’t affected by the situation in Greece.

“We are inviting the Greek government and all the political forces that are exploiting the patriotism of Greeks abroad to serve their own partisan interests and to gain votes, to stop creating misconceptions and to deal with the real problems of migrants, such as the application of programmes to preserve the Greek language and culture in Australia and the return of hospitality programmes for Greek youth abroad so that they can get to know the land of their ancestors,” wrote Giannis Lesses, President of Platon Workers’ League, in a message to Neos Kosmos.
