The leaders of Greece, Cyprus and Egypt have signed the basic agreement for the construction of one of the largest pipelines of natural gas.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met at Zappeion in Athens on Thursday before signing the EastMed Interstate Agreement by Greek Energy Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, his Israeli counterpart Yuval Steinitz and Georgios Lakkotrypis of Cyprus.
During their discussion, Mr Mitsotakis and Mr Netanyahu reaffirmed their close working relationship and agreed to work together to ensure stability in the region. Earlier, Mr Mitsotakis met with Mr Anastasiades and agreed that the energy project is the “cornerstone of a very important tripartite cooperation in the energy field and beyond”.

Mr Mitsotakis said that the pipeline, beyond its obvious benefits for energy and the economy, is also a contributing factor for peace and geostrategic stability in the area.
The construction of the pipeline hopes to upgrade the geostrategic importance of Greece and Cyprus while making Greece a critical energy hub in the region’s supply network.
