Oakleigh’s shopping centre, particularly its famous Greek shops,  came alive this morning with people queuing to buy food, including produce for Greek Orthodox Easter next week.

Neos Kosmos visited Oakleigh shopping centre, including the famous Greek precinct of Eaton Mall, and adjoining Portman and Chester streets and Atherton Road on Thursday 9 April between 1am and 12pm.

Orderly queues formed outside butcher and fish shops, cafes, delicatessens and nut shops. Shopowners and customers alike were obeying social distancing and hygiene rules.

Cambodian shopowner, Yuan Cheng Zhang has had his gift shop, next to Nikos Cakes, at  the corner of Eaton Mall and Portman St, for 32 years.

Considered an honarary Greek shop, the store’s real name is Yen Huot,  but, in the Greek community, it’s affectionately known as the Kinezo (the Chinaman).

Mr Zhang showed Neos Kosmos the  beautiful array of Greek candles for sale in his shop along with other Easter goods.
