National Union of Greek-Australian Students (NUGAS) members held their annual general meeting last Monday afternoon.

This time however, things were a little different as the event was held online via the Zoom application, due to the coronavirus restrictions.

The chairman of the board, Anastasia Dolkas, was in charge of coordinating the event, with discussions ranging from the different activities of the Union as well as events such as souvlaki day, frappe day and the annual ball. They examined the positive response to the events compared to previous years.

Additionally, there was mention of the involvement of NUGAS within the Hellenic community, helping to maintain the good relationship between the two sides, but also the rapid growth of the organisation’s online presence through their social media profiles on Instagram and Facebook.

The meeting was attended by the representatives of the Greek societies across all Melbourne universities such as Deakin (DUGS), LaTrobe (LUGS), Monash (MHSS), RMIT (RUSH), Swinburne (SHS) and Victoria University (VUGS), while there were also members from Sydney and Adelaide universities within the online audience.

Dean Kotsianis was honoured with the Certificate of Appreciation Award for his service towards the Union and towards the end of the evening the elections for the new committee were held.

Denise Serdenes and Eleni Nzifas from the University of Melbourne were elected in the positions of chairman and vice-chairman respectively.

Alongside them were Katerina Hatzi, Tania Koumanelis, Andrew Malessiankos and John Paras.

The newly elected members of the board expressed their gratitude towards those that elected them, and expressed eagnerness to carry on the work of the previous committee and expand NUGAS’ field of action within the next year despite the obvious challenges that exist due to the coronavirus.
