The Athens metro project is continuing to rejuvinate transport in the Greek capital, and will add three new metro stations to its sytem on 7 July.
The Urban Rail Transport SA (STASY) announced on Friday that new stations to extend the blue line (Line 3) westward by 4km will be added. These will be named after the suburbs of the stops, and are Agia Varvara, Koridallos and Nikea.
Stops on Line 3 will now total 24, and the enhancement of the blue line is expected to serve 60,000 passengers daily – a figure that could rise in 2022 when more stations are added. Further additions will be stations at Maniatika, Piraeus proper and the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus which will extend the network around the Piraeus region.

Thanks to the addition of the stops, a trip from Nikea to Syntagma will now take just 14 minutes whereas a ride from Nikea to the Airport would take 55 minutes.
The bus routes would also be redesigned to link several areas of Piraeus to the new stations.
