East Melbourne’s Greek Orthodox Church ‘The Annunciation of our Lady’ has been at the forefront of events this year celebrating the 25th March national day.
The iconic Evangelismos church honoured the double national and religious celebration with a gathering supporting a good cause: raising funds for the reinstatement of the church following the devastating fire of 2016.
More than 150 guests attended the luncheon at Brunswick’s The Aegean restaurant, featuring MC Stella Papas and guest speakers, Bishop Ezekiel who spoke of the importance of the day and researcher Juliana Charpantidou who provided an overview of the history of the church since its humble beginnings as the first Orthodox Greek Church for Victorians.
Ms Papas’ father Kosta Papakonstantinos, alongside Father Antonios and the Church Committee had also an integral role in coordinating the event.
During the luncheon, Pegasus Dancing Academy members performed for guests while inviting them to the dance floor, and an auction took place with gifts donated by parishioners, sponsors and supporters of the parish and around Melbourne.
In her brief introduction of the church, Ms Papas spoke of a ‘precious jewel’ within our community that brings up sentimental memories for many.
Reflecting on the success of the event following positive feedback expressed by guests, she told Neos Kosmos about a comment that stood out for her.
“A gentleman’s words were very touching, ‘I felt I was part of a big loving family today’ he shared. It brought a tear to my eye.”
