Victorians woke to day 2 of the state’s snap lockdown on Sunday, with 16 new locally acquired cases, from 53,283 tests.

All of them are linked to current outbreaks, but an extra one was already added to the tally by the afternoon.

The Mildura man’s test results only came back positive at 10 am, Sunday morning with the state’s COVID Commander Jeroen Weimar saying interviews were ongoing with a further update due to follow.

And as first leaked by ABC’s Rafael Epstein in the morning prior to the officials’ press conference, one of the new infections detected is linked to a rugby match.

The case connected to the Wallabies game at Aami Park marks a new line of transmission at a crowded event.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, Brett Sutton also pointed to a Euros final gathering of more than 400 people at The Crafty Squire as site of concern.

“If you were there for any period of time, you have to get tested and quarantine for 14 days,” Professor Sutton said.

“It’s really a shout out to anyone who’s been there from 3:00am to 8:00am to contact us and to make sure you’re testing and quarantining.”

Other venues of particular concern to authorities as exposure sites include the Ms Frankies restaurant due to a large group having dined there and Young and Jacksons.

The new information comes amidst expert warnings that transmission rates will not be low enough by Tuesday, the day the snap lockdown is due to end at 11.59pm.

“I hope I’m wrong but I suspect it will probably take more than five days,” Emergency Physician Dr Stephen Parnis told the ABC.

“It really is all about the trends that happen with the number of cases, but I think more importantly the number of exposure sites which has been ballooning out in recent days.”

With the Delta variant of COVID-19 presenting a rate of transmission three times higher than previous strains, the state’s newest cluster linked back to NSW has continued to grow in the past few days.

As of Sunday, the number of exposure sites has exceeded 215. Recent additions of suburbs include Kew, Altona Meadows and Truganina.

Asked about the chances of the lockdown being lifted Tuesday, Premier Daniel Andrews said it’s “too early” to know.

Mr Andrews had previously flagged the possibility for regional Victoria to emerge earlier from the state-wide lockdown. But the case in Mildura makes the scenario seem quite unlikely at the moment.

“It is not the day to be announcing parts of Victoria operating under different rules. We take no joy that there is a case in Mildura and that will require a lot of work.

“Victoria is a big state but when it comes to the spread of this virus, it is actually very small.”
