Greek-Australian Paul Moraitis, who operates as a grocer in Sydney, could soon achieve one of the highest accolades in his industry.

His business, Kareela Grocer, in the region of Sutherland, has been announced as finalists in this year’s Sydney Markets Fresh Awards.

Kareela Grocer, named after the suburb it is located in, is battling it out in two categories of the 2021 Greengrocer awards (a part of the Fresh Awards):  Service Excellence and Best Medium Business.

“It was external validation that we’re doing the right thing by most people”, Mr Moraitis told local paper, The Leader.

“It’s our passion for quality, our experience in the industry which spans over 40 years and the fantastic staff we have – the team have a lot of produce experience and they have a passion for what they do,” he said.

According to the paper, Kareela Grocer is a family-owned business and opened in 2010. They have added delivery salads, sliced meats, cheeses and continental groceries to their fruit and vegetables, supplying for various shire restaurants and cafes.

The announcement of the winners will be on Wednesday 8 September 2021.

According to the organisers’ website, many criteria are used to determine nominees such as store appearance, customer service, produce quality, range and freshness, product knowledge, culinary execution, merchandising and branding.
