Victoria has recorded 510 new COVID cases, of which 124 have been linked to known cases, and one death linked to coronavirus. Another case was recorded from overseas.

The state is also nearing the 70 per cent first-dose vaccination target with 69.3 per cent of eligible Victorians having had at least one dose of the jab.

Despite cases being more than 500, the increase in vaccination doses means that Melbourne businesses could be allowed to reopen under a plan to trial vaccine passports. This may be up and running as early as next week.

Councillors from the City of Melbourne on Tuesday will call on the state government to kick off the passport scheme at venues around the CBD which has been crushed by the pandemic and six lockdowns already having taken place in the city.

Melbourne may become the first city and municipality to piot the vaccine passport scheme, a temporary measure. Should the passport system be implemented, arts and entertainment venues such as the Garden STate Hotel, Asado, Cherry Bar and San Telmo may open their doors to the fully vaccinated.
