The international federation of water sports, FINA, updated team and individual sports rankings following the results of the 2020 Toyko Olympics. Teams are given points based on the outcomes of competitions that are FINA recognised tournaments.

The Greek national men’s water polo team has made it to the top of the ladder with 141 points, despite winning silver at the Olympics, losing the gold to Serbia.

Montenegro follow behind in second with 128 points and Serbia has clinched a very close third with 126 points. Hungary is in fourth place 10 points behind Serbia, while Croatia rounds out the top five with 108 points.

The number one spot comes as welcome news to the national team after a monumental year at this year’s Olympics, when they made it to their first ever finals.

Greece’s men’s water polo team blitzed their way through to finals, after playing Montenegro in the quarterfinals, crushing them with a final score of 10-4.

The boys in blue and white then went on to take on Hungary in the semifinals, beating them 9-6, paving the way to a guaranteed medal against Serbia in the final.

Greece fought hard for the gold against Serbia, but took home the silver instead after losing 13-10.
