Maria Sakkari is ahead of a historic match that could win her the Ostrava Open title, but a career milestone has already been reached.

The 26-year-old made it this week to a singles ranking of world no. 10, the highest a Greek female player has ever attained.

It came after prevailing over top-seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland 6-4 7-5.

She managed to break Swiatek in the opening game of the match, while Swiatek had her first break points in the second game of the second but failing to convert them, eventually dropping her serve in the fifth game.

“It was a very high-level match, and I’m very happy that I could bring that level today,” Sakkari told the press.

“It’s a very important thing for me, and Iga is a very tough opponent because she’s very solid and she fights a lot. She’s one of the best players now, and I’m very happy with the way I played.”

Sakkari climbed up to top 10 after Petra Kvitova was crushed by Anett Kontaveit in the semi-final.

Estonian Kontaveit will be her opponent at the Ostrava final, scheduled for Sunday 26 September at 10.30 pm AEST.

It will be the first final for the Greek since 2019 after losing nine straight WTA semi-finals.
