Greek Super League teams mellowed out on matchday 5, as the Athenian derby produced a no goal game. AEK and PAOK dominated in their own games after last week’s derby and Lamia scored its first win of the season.

Volos and Asteras Tripolis kicked off matchday 5 at Panthessaliko Stadium. Tom van Weert gave Volos the lead in the 18th minute after a successful penalty. Defender Franco Ferrari gave the hosts an extra leg up in the 79th minute, but it was Kévin Soni who slightly eased the pain of Asteras by scoring five minutes out from full time.

Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium welcomed Aris and visitors Apollon Smyrni on Saturday, for a quiet game that ended on a 0-0 draw, a stark contrast compared to the host’s 3-1 over Atromitos the week prior.

Atromitos seemed to have better luck this week in the match against PAS Giannina, taking an early 1-0 lead thanks to Victor Klonaridis in the sixth minute. Things took a surprising turn in the 11th hour of the match, as Ahmad Mendes Moreira equalised the match, taking away Atromitos’ chance at a celebration.

AEK and PAOK mirrored one another’s performances over the weekend, both winning 3-1 against Panetolikos and OFI respectively.

Levi García and Ognjen Vranješ gave AEK a 2-0 lead in the first half, before Nikos Vergos gave Panetolikos its only goal of the match. Steven Zuber came in at the 83rd minute to solidify AEK’s win.

OFI could not keep visitors PAOK at bay on home soil, as Karol Świderski, Jasmin Kurtić and Douglas Augusto brought a 3-0 lead to the men from Thessaloniki. OFI could only muster up one goal one minute into overtime thanks to striker Adil Nabi.

Lamia was finally able to mark a win after a start with losses and draws. Giorgos Manousos made a successful penalty for the team in the first half, before Aias Aosman of Ionikos pulled out a goal in the 36th minute, equalising the score. Lamia pushed back hard early in the first half, and was rewarded with another goal made by Vladimir Golemić, bringing them a 2-1 win.

It was an interesting derby for Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, but not because of the on field game play. Olympiacos apologised for the antics of some football fans at Karaiskakis Stadium. After a goalless game, Olympiacos told media that this would be “the last time we allow 50 brainless people to spoil the atmosphere and the time and the rhythm of the game” after smoke from flares disrupted the match.
