A spike in infections came after several days of lower case tallies.

Victoria’s new case numbers continue to sit over 2,000 for the second day with 2,179 new local case numbers and six deaths recorded on Friday morning.

The day before, there were 2,297 cases recorded and 11 deaths – the highest single-day tally in any Australian state or territory since the pandemic began.

Victoria’s death toll for the current Delta outbreak is at 131, and a high number of cases are from the Greek community which was struck proportionately high from COVID last year as the pandemic swept through aged care homes. On Wednesday there were 23 cases

Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews said yesterday that Victoria remained on track to follow its roadmap out of lockdown next week, despite the record case numbers which some experts say have yet to peak. He was concerned that people are “tiring and just letting their guard down and gathering in places where they shouldn’t be”.

“It’s really a matter of not doing that for another couple of week, we will be at the top of the peak in a couple of weeks so once we get there the numbers are start to drop,” he said
