Former PASOK prime minister George Papandreou may claim the leadership of the socialist KINAL (Movement for Change) party, a centre-left political alliance which rose from the ashes of the now-defunct PASOK.

Fofi Gennimata had announced the formation of KINAL in July 2017, when she was PASOK leader. The party was a conglomerate of groups of the centre-left, including Stavros Theodorakis’ River party and DIMAR.

It is expected that Mr Papandreou will meet with Vassilis Kegeroglou, a candidate for the leadership who is the secretary of KINAL’s parliamentary group. Mr Kegeroglou has hinted that he may reformulate his position if the former prime minister enters the race for the party leadership following the departure of Ms Gennimata due to health reasons.

Apart from meeting with Mr Kegeroglou, Mr Papandreou has already requested to make contact with KINAL’s Central Political Committee Manolis Christoudoulakis, Nikos Androulakis, Pavlos Geroulanos, Harry Kastanidis, Andreas Loverdos and Pavlos Christidis.
