Fotini ‘Fofi’ Gennimata passed away, aged 56, at Evangelismos Hospital where she was being treated for the last two weeks.

Ms Gennimata had been president of the socialist PASOK movement from 2015 through to 2021. She also served as the president of the Movement for Change (KINAL), a coalition of centre-left parties formed around PASOK. She was the daughter of Georgios Gennimatas, a leading member of the PASOK party in the 1980s. Her father died of cancer in April 1995.

“We extend our condolences to her family and friends,” Evangelismos Hospital, where Ms Gennimata had been treated since 12 October, said in a statement.

Ms Gennimata has served in a number of different roles in various governments, serving in the Cabinet of George Papandreou as a Deputy Minister of Health and Welfare and an Alternate Minister of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs.

She had pulled out as leader of KINAL due to her deteriorating health.
