The 2021 achievements of Greek basketball superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo were given the recognition they deserve when prestigious men’s magazine “GQ” named him their “Athlete of the Year” for which he will also feature on the magazine’s cover as part of its 26th annual “Men of the Year” edition.

The “Men of the Year” edition recognises the contribution of individuals who had the “most effect” on culture. Sharing the spotlight with the “Greek Freak” are Lil Nax Z who GQ chose as its musician of the year and actor Tom Holland who is the magazine’s “superhero of the year”.  GQ called 2021 the “Year of the Brave” and the three men “embody the spirit of bravery”.

The Greek born player was chosen the National Basketball Association’s Most Valuable Player for his heroics in helping to secure the championship for his team, the Milwaukee Bucks earlier this year.

In selecting the basketballer GQ noted on its website: “Giannis Antetokounmpo, who does not want to be the new face of the NBA but probably can’t stop it from happening anyway—because of his inspiring life story, unrivaled determination in competition, preternatural charisma, and that awe-inspiring performance in this year’s NBA playoffs. ”

He is leading a “diaper drive” in Milwaukee to celebrate the birth of his second son and also to help families in need in the city.

Last week his team visited the White where he and his teammates met US President Joe Biden.
