The biggest boxing fight for our country featuring Greek Australian George Kambosos Jr is taking place right now.

Kambosos is an underdog going against lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez in a match that has been dubbed “a blockbuster” following eight cancellations.

Lopez is a WBA, IBF and WBO champion trying to hold on to his titles at New York’s Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden.

Undefeated Lopez has 16 wins, a perfect score with most acquired by knock-outs (12).

Kambosos remains a 6-1 outsider, but told DAZN pre-fight that he relished in being the underdog.

“I thrive on it,” he says. “I’ve been underdog plenty of times in my career before.

“I know I do everything better than he does.”

The winner could look at a future unification fight against Devin Haney, who holds the WBC lightweight belt. Another option could be a bout with rising star Gervonta Davis.

Kambosos earned two split decision victories in his last two fights, against Mickey Bey and Lee Selby. This is just Kambosos’ third fight on US soil.

The main event began at midday AEDT. The ring walks for the feature bout took place around 2.30pm.
