The case of Albanian detainee Ilia Kareli who died in custody back in March 2014 while in Nigrita Prison has been trialed.

Twelve prison officials were handed prison sentences spanning from three to five years yesterday for torturing the 42 year old detainee who passed upon his arrival from Malandrino Prison in Fokida.

The deceased had stabbed their colleague Giorgos Tsironis to death at Malandrinos Prison, from where he had been transferred.

Following the verdict of the Mixed Jury Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki that found the suspects guilty of torture, a felony, the sentences of those who received four to five year terms were suspended. They had initially been convicted and sentenced to five to seven years.

The death of the prisoner was attributed to a heart attack, which was ascertained to have begun before his arrival at Nigrita Prison and was not a result of torture.
