The winning streak has come to an end for fifth-seed Maria Sakkari who has been defeated in straight sets, 6-7 (0-7), 3-6 to America’s 21st-seed Jessica Pegula.

Sakkari, was dominated by the American after a tie-break in the first set, eliminating the Greek player. Pegula moved through without conceding a point.

The American also led in the second with 5-2.

The fifth seed, who fought hard in the next set, pushing Pegula for a break in the ninth, did not manage to turn the game.

Sakkari had some success in winning first serves but Pegula did much better in second-serve wins (69per cent to 41 per cent over Sakkari).

Meanwhile, with the heat in Melbourne going over 33 degrees, the two made some faults, with Sakkari not responding as effectively as her opponent (5 to 3).
