Thanassi Kokkinakis promised to make a comeback before the Australian Open and true to his word, sent Australia to the finals of the Davis Cup after a thrilling win against Hungary.

Kokkinakis, beat Zsombor Piros 6-4, 6-4 in the deciding qualifying singles round during the crucial fifth match at Ken Rosewell Stadium.

The team of John Peers and Luke Saville had lost in straight sets to Fabian Marozsan and Mate Valkusz, which would leave Australia out if both return singles matches didn’t win.

Alex De Minaur set the pace by overcoming Marton Fucsovics, with a 7-6, 6-4 win, before Kokkinakis sealed the win.

“I had full confidence in the guys – Demon’s our leader, unbelievable from him… and I had to do my part,” Kokkinakis said .

Kokkinakis has shown great form after a long period of injuries, winning the ATP tournament in Adelaide in January followed by his Australian Open doubles win with Nick Kyrgios.

“To play a fifth rubber at home, it’s incredible. I get nervous but knowing these guys come out here and give it their all every time, it makes me want to perform..

“I couldn’t have asked for more to start the year. Davis Cup’s so different – in those ATP tournaments, you’re playing for yourself. Having this support is unreal,” said Kokkinakis.

The group stage of the finals will take place in September, ahead of the knockouts in late November.

Greece’s national team also secured a spot in the 20th semifinal round of the play offs of the Davis Cup. Petros Tsitsipas, Stefanos’ brother was the one to send the team through after a stunning win against Jamaica’s Rowland Phillips with a 4-6,6-4,6-4 .
