John Kennedy the member for Hawthorn and Nina Taylor the Southern Metropolitan upper house member in the Victorian government visited the Boroondara Camberwell Greek senior citizens club just before Greek Easter.

“The hospitality was excellent, as was the coffee, the variety of treats and the conversation. I, like many Hawthorn residents, recall my visits to Greece fondly and am a great admirer of Greek culture. Indeed, my newest staff member Penny speaks fluent Greek,” said Mr Kennedy.

Mr Kennedy who provided $2000 to the Greek senior citizens club on an annual basis from the Victorian Labor government’s multicultural seniors support program said it is going to good use.

“This stellar club is also receiving public liability and group personal accident insurance,” said Mr Kennedy.

The funding is part of a $7.4 million support over the next four years provided to 900 multicultural groups to support the delivery of in-person and digital archives.

Mr Kennedy said that the investment is important in recognising “how important cultural institutions like this are to our Hawthorn-Camberwell community.”

He added that this important recognition is part of “saying thank you for how these older migrants came to Victoria and worked hard all of their life to build a better future not just for their children, but for the entire state of Victoria.”

Ms Taylor echoed the member for Hawthorn’s views and said that Greek senior citizens had sacrificed much and had contributed even more to the development of a postwar Australia.
