If elected, Labor will commit to funding $200,000 towards the building of a cafetaria at Oakleigh Grammar, announced Clare O’Neil the member for Hotham.

In a statement from her office, Ms O’Neil said that the funding “would be provided as soon as possible in the first term of a Labor Government”.

Principal Mark Robertson said the school would benefit from a dedicated, indoor cafetaria.

“We are very excited about the prospect of a dedicated indoor cafeteria to replace our current Year 12 Common Room which will be relocated into the new Centre for Academic Excellence upon completion later this year. Our current outdoor canteen will be repurposed into much needed additional office space. The new cafeteria will not only provide a communal space for our students, it will provide opportunities for them to participate in accredited barista courses,” Mr Robertson told Neos Kosmos.

Ms O’Neil said in a statement the new facility would “provide a wonderful community hub for students, parents, and families and the broader school community.”

“It will also be available to many local community groups. It will mean that students and others can gather at the café in a safe and enclosed environment.,” Ms O’Neil said.

Oakleigh Grammar is a low-fee paying school whose numbers have grown and is well connected to the wider community of the area and is close the St Anargiri Greek Orthodox Church.

“I am thrilled to be able to support this wonderful school and to provide a great community hub for the students and broader community,” Ms O’Neil said.
