Ending an eight-year trophy drought, the Greens have won the 2022 Greek Cup Final defeating PAOK 1-0.

Panathinaikos dominated the first half with a penalty goal scored by Aitor Cantalapiedra in the 34th minute with PAOK failing in attempts to equalize in the second half.

The Saturday night game was played in front of a split crowd of 43,000, with fans from the two clubs separated by empty seats in the 70,000-seat Athens Olympic Stadium.

Despite the measures, fan clashes erupted early even before the start of the game and continued throughout, with the violence that marred the match making international headlines.

Kickoff was delayed for half an hour as spectators from both teams started arriving at the stadium with some trying to enter the empty seats separating them.

Riot police intervened with teargas to break the crowd.

The final was interrupted again during the first half, following the conversion of Cantalapiedra’s winning penalty goal after a VAR check.

Cantalapiedra was celebrating in front of PAOK fans when hit in the hand by a projectile, which according to Panathinaikos was a chunk of cement.

Police also said that outside the stadium PAOK fans clashed with authorities during half-time.

The last time Panathinaikos clinched the Greek Cup was in 2014, defeating PAOK again.

Winning the Cup gives the Greens the ticket to next season’s Europa Conference League from the third qualifying round.
